What to look for when searching for a web host

search-web-hostHow to choose the right web host that suits your needs? Consider the services you need and the cost, and choose a reliable web host. But before you go looking for a host you should be equipped with basic information.

Bandwidth - is the amount of information that passes between the web hosting server and a visitor's computer. You will get a monthly quota of bandwidth and it will generally be a number in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). The computer, of a visitor to your website, pulls information from the server your website is located on, and the information gets transferred on it. This transfer of information uses some of your allocated bandwidth. Text takes up less bandwidth than designs, flash animations, audios or videos. If your site is a complex one with more visitors then you need high bandwidth.

Space - is the amount of storage allocated for you to place your website in. This number will be in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). If you have lot of visuals or big files online, you need a hosting plan with a large space, and conversely if you plan on hosting a small site then buy a plan with less storage (500 MB of storage and 1 GB of transfer).

Email accounts - are today a must for website owners. If you have a website you should have an email address for that site. Most sites need only one email address per person. Be it a personal website or a business one each person associated with the site will need an email address and so find a hosting plan with many email addresses. POP3 email allows you to use outlook, thunderbird, and other similar email programs.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – permits you to transfer files between your computer and your website in a fast and easy manner. FTP is required for a big site that is constantly changing and getting updated and not for small sites or sites that don't change often.

My SQL Databases - are necessary for things like most photo galleries, calendars, shopping carts, etc. Each item that requires My SQL will use one database, so choose a plan with enough databases for your situation. Find a host that is flexible and will allow you to add on to your package at anytime.

Sub domain - is simply something.yourdomain.com. You can use any word you would like in front of your domain name and have it directed to a different webpage. Since not everybody requires it you do not need to pick a host based on this feature.

Support system –Choose a web host that addresses your problems and requests quickly and appropriately. Choose a reliable and recommended host. A good web host includes great support with all of their plans.

Shared server - is when many web sites share the same server.

Dedicated server - hosts only you and is good for high traffic or big businesses but is more expensive.

Operating systems - Linux servers are more stable and often cheaper than windows servers. Linux is very popular and most scripts are designed to work on these servers.
